Abstract

Family disharmony can alter parental roles, communication, emotional support, and the educational environment experienced by children. This study examines the factors causing family disharmony and its implications for children’s education in Padak Hamlet, Kertasari Village, Labuhan Haji District, East Lombok Regency. The study employed a qualitative descriptive design. Data were collected through non-participant observation, interviews, and documentation. The research subjects included parents experiencing family disharmony, children, and nearby neighbours; eight informants are listed in the research appendix. Data credibility was examined through credibility, dependability, and confirmability procedures, while analysis was conducted descriptively by organizing information from field observations and interviews. The findings identify four major factors associated with family disharmony: difficulties in meeting economic needs, infidelity, domestic violence, and unbalanced communication. Economic instability can increase parental stress and reduce attention to children. Infidelity weakens trust and warmth in the marital relationship. Domestic violence creates an unsafe family environment and may expose children to psychological distress. Unbalanced communication produces suspicion, emotional distance, and unresolved conflict. The educational impacts are not uniform. Some children become difficult to manage, less motivated to attend school, withdrawn, and less confident. Some experience disrupted concentration and learning because family conflict occupies their emotional attention. However, the study also finds a positive response: some parents deliberately separate marital problems from their parenting responsibilities and prioritize children’s education. The study concludes that family disharmony can become an important social context of educational problems, but parental awareness, affection, communication, and continued educational support can reduce its negative effects.
