Well-functioning urban drainage is the main key to preventing flooding and inundation in densely populated residential areas. This study was conducted to assess the actual condition of drainage channels and estimate sediment accumulation in the long term in Medan Helvetia and Medan Petisah Districts, Medan City, North Sumatra.Measurements were carried out at nine points along Jalan Kapten Muslim and Jalan Gatot Subroto using four analytical approaches: population growth projections, rainfall frequency analysis, sediment volume calculation, and evapotranspiration estimation using the Penman-Monteith FAO-56 method. Results show sediment thickness ranged from 6 to 31 cm, with the most severe condition found at the Zipur Field section of Jalan Kapten Muslim. This study confirms that periodic sediment dredging and increasing drainage channel capacity are essential to handle future surges in runoff discharge
