Abstract

Futsal requires high aerobic capacity (VO₂Max) as the foundation for endurance and repeated performance. However, there is a practical dilemma for coaches in choosing the most effective and efficient training method to increase VO₂Max, between Interval Training (IT) and Sprint Repetition (SR), given that direct comparative evidence in the context of futsal is still limited. This study aims to compare the effectiveness of these two methods in improving the VO₂Max of futsal players. The method used was a quasi-experimental pretest-posttest control group design with 30 university futsal players divided into three groups: IT, SR, and control. The training intervention was conducted for 8 weeks with a frequency of 3 sessions per week, and VO₂Max was measured using the 20-Meter Shuttle Run Test. The results showed that both IT and SR significantly increased VO₂Max (by 13.5% and 10.5%, respectively), while the control group did not experience a significant increase. Further comparative analysis revealed that IT provided a statistically higher increase in VO₂Max compared to SR. The conclusion of this study confirms the superiority of IT over SR in improving the aerobic capacity of futsal players, presumably due to the accumulation of training time in the high-intensity zone for a longer period.
