Abstract

This study aims to analyze the process through which the meaning of thrifting transforms from an economically motivated consumption choice into a lifestyle practice among university students in Selong, East Lombok. The study employed a qualitative approach using interpretative phenomenology. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation and were analyzed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) through an idiographic process involving repeated reading, exploratory noting, case-level theme development, and cross-case pattern analysis. The findings reconstruct the transformation of thrifting meanings into six processual stages: economic orientation, feasibility evaluation, meaning redefinition, preference formation, habituation, and integration into everyday life. Affordable prices function as the initial entry point into thrifting, while the continuity of the practice is shaped by post-purchase experiences, particularly evaluations of product quality, condition, brand, uniqueness, and alignment with personal taste. Positive experiences reduce concerns associated with the second-hand status of clothing, strengthen preferences, encourage repeated purchasing and use, and gradually reposition thrifting from an affordable clothing alternative into a way of managing everyday appearance. Social acceptance further reinforces the normalization of the practice, whereas ecological awareness does not emerge as a dominant consideration. The study demonstrates that thrifting as a lifestyle develops through the accumulation of experience, evaluation, and habituation.
