TEKNIK PERMAINAN TROMPONG PADA KESENIAN GENDANG BETEP DI SANGGAR MANDI SUARE DESA MENCEH KECAMATAN SAKRA TIMUR

Abstract

This study aims to describe trompong playing techniques in the Gendang Betep traditional music at Sanggar Mandi Suare, Menceh Village, Sakra Timur District, East Lombok Regency. Gendang Betep is a Sasak traditional musical art performed collectively through the combination of rhythmic and melodic instruments. Trompong has an important role as a melodic carrier; therefore, players’ ability to control strokes, tempo, dynamics, and interaction among performers shapes the musical character of the performance. This research employed a descriptive qualitative approach. Data were obtained through observations of rehearsals and performances, interviews with the studio manager and sekahe, and documentation in the form of photographs and recordings. Data were analyzed through data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing, while data credibility was examined through source and technique triangulation. The findings identify four main trompong playing techniques: 

ngambak, beradeng or slowing down, kotekan or betimbalan, and kuncik nade. Ngambak is used to emphasize particular basic notes through stronger strokes. Beradeng is performed by gradually reducing stroke speed and intensity to create smooth transitions and dynamics. Kotekan or betimbalan consists of interlocking patterns among sekahe, producing a dynamic rhythmic texture. Kuncik nade involves repeatedly sustaining particular notes as a stable reference within a musical section. These findings indicate that trompong techniques function not only as musical practices but also as local knowledge that is important for documentation, learning, and the regeneration of Gendang Betep as a Sasak traditional performing art.
