Abstract

Sleep quality is an important health indicator for adolescents because it supports recovery, emotional regulation, concentration, and learning readiness. This study examined the effect of a regular running-based exercise program on the sleep quality of students at MTs Al-Hasaniyah NW Jenggik. A quantitative pre-experimental method with a one-group pretest-posttest design was applied. The participants were 55 students with complete paired questionnaire data. The intervention consisted of a structured running program for six weeks, conducted three times per week through warm-up, moderate continuous running, interval running, and cool-down activities. Sleep quality was measured using a Likert-scale questionnaire before and after the intervention. Data were analyzed through descriptive statistics, reliability testing, Shapiro-Wilk normality, Levene homogeneity, paired-sample t-test, and Wilcoxon signed-rank test. The mean sleep quality score increased from 35.85±4.64 to 36.35±4.52, with a mean difference of 0.49 points. The paired-sample t-test showed a significant difference between pretest and posttest scores (t=2.30; p=0.026; 95% CI=0.06–0.92), while the Wilcoxon test confirmed the improvement (p=0.015). The effect size was small (Cohen’s dz=0.31), indicating that regular exercise produced a statistically significant but modest improvement. The findings suggest that school-based running activities can be used as a practical non-pharmacological strategy to support adolescent sleep health.
