Abstract

Early childhood is a crucial phase for brain development; however, the detection of risks regarding Children with Special Needs (CSN) is often delayed, particularly within non-formal childcare services. This community service activity aims to enhance the capacity of teachers at Harapan Keluarga Daycare Center (TPA), Selong District, in conducting early detection of CSN. The partner faces challenges regarding limited knowledge of the 'red flags' of developmental deviations and the absence of standardized screening instruments, which leads to subjective monitoring. The program implementation methods included a workshop on special needs literacy, technical training on the use of KPSP and M-CHAT instruments, and supervised independent screening of 33 children. The results indicated a 15% increase in teachers' understanding and skills based on pre-test and post-test evaluations. Furthermore, the screening implementation successfully identified three (3) children with indicated risks of special needs, consisting of two children at risk of Autism Spectrum Disorder and one child with cognitive impairment. The program concludes that intensive mentoring is effective in opening the window for early intervention and transforming the daycare center into an inclusive institution that is proactive in monitoring child growth and development.
